Learning to Achieve - Session 3 - July 14, 2007

Teachers,Tutors, and Program Managers: Are you looking for research-proven teaching methods to help struggling learners achieve their goals? Do you have questions about effectively serving adults with learning disabilities-- diagnosed or undiagnosed-- which, according to research, may apply to 50 to 80% of our adult ed population?

The Learning to Achieve series provides practitioners with practical strategies developed within the learning disabilities community that work for all of our learners.

We'll provide you with a solid definition of LD, and talk about legal issues in serving this population. We'll give you valuable reading and writing strategies that work for all of our learners, and talk specifically about how to teach "content", which applies to HSE, Citizenship, and more. A hallmark of the series is the module on how to teach, utilizing the Explicit Instruction model. We'll connect LD and struggling learners to workforce strategies, a topic of importance to learners and programs alike.

Learning to Achieve training is required of all new paid instructional staff, and should be completed within the first year of hire. We hope you can join us for this valuable professional development opportunity!

Learning to Achieve workshops are delivered in a module format, with eight modules delivered face-to-face and others delivered online.

Explicit Instruction for Strategy Learning: Covers how explicit instruction can be used to help adults with LD and all learners develop strategies to learn (2 hrs.)

LD and English Language Learners (Online module debrief): Takes a look at the latest research and information around ELLs and LD (1 hr). The debrief for this module will be part of workshop. Once you have completed the online module, print or save as a PDF your certificate of completion to bring to your face-to-face session. Also, please bring any notes you take during the online session to the face-to-face workshop for discussion purposes.You must complete the online module to attend the workshop.

Content Learning: Covers instructional approaches that can help adults with LD and all struggling learners learn content from written materials (2 hrs.)
